Rihanna supports Gay Rights on Instagram
Using fashion to speak out against Russia’s anti-gay stance, Rihanna showed solidarity with gay rights advocates at Sochi Olympics by wearing a P6 hat.
Rih-Rih snapped a photo of herself wearing an Alexander Wang hat that reads “P6? on Instagram over the weekend, following up the posts with links to stories in the New York Times about the P6 campaign. Then she hashtagged #AntiDiscrimination.
P6 refers to the Principle 6 clause in the Olympic Charter, which states that: “Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.” Now that International Olympic Committee extended that clause to cover sexual orientation, P6 has become a symbol of Russia’s anti-homosexual policies and the decision to stage the Olympics in Sochi.
As the P6 campaign’s website explains, “Wearing Principle 6 gear will show support for the Olympic value of non-discrimination and is a tangible way to speak out against the anti-gay laws and violence in Russia leading up to the 2014 Winter Games.”
Proceeds from P6 merchandise has been earmarked to support LGBT advocacy groups in Russia.
