“Sam & Cat” is apparently a popular show on Nickelodeon starring Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy. But tweens will be disappointed to learn (I guess?) that the show’s future is on thin ice and hasn’t been renewed for a second season, allegedly because the network is pissed that some sexy selfies the 21-year-old McCurdy took leaked online last month. The photos, including one in which McCurdy is on all fours wearing a thong, leaked online days after McCurdy mocked ex-boyfriend Andre Drummond’s kissing abilities on a podcast. McCurdy tweeted that she had sent the photos to one person (i.e. Drummond) but Drummond denies posting them online.
Nickelodeon, meanwhile, insists that the photos did not cause any rift between the network and McCurdy, but something must have, because McCurdy skipped this weekend’s Kids Choice Awards. “It has to do with how Nickelodeon treated me, that’s all,” McCurdy tweeted, explaining her absence. “I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing. No matter who or what you support, I believe in supporting fairness first.” She then tweeted that her statements about the dust up at Nickelodeon had nothing to do with the pics.
But c’mon. I’m sure the photos have something to do with the show’s impending cancellation. Nickelodeon, like Disney, seems to not quite know how to handle it when one of their stars starts to express themselves sexually in a way that hasn’t been pre-approved. I’m guessing that there were already problems — between McCurdy and Grande, and McCurdy and the network — and then these photos pushed things over the edge. Eh, I’m sure McCurdy will land on her feet just fine. But for her sake, I hope the next time she sends a sexy selfie to a boyfriend, she has the good sense to crop her face out. [NY Daily News]
